Day 30
2026-05-04
Goal: to Wrightwood
All night the wind like a ceaseless ocean wave 🌊
It would build and crest and blow and go silent to start over again - very difficult to sleep and tent getting flapped and blown about in addition to the sound. Also cold.
Up and packing in the cold and wind. The valley below is filled with clouds.
Start hiking to warm up - hands are frozen, wearing my puffy jacket while hiking for the first time.
Hike through burned out area - need to get off trail and road walk as the trail is so wrecked from the fire - many many blow downs over the trail making it difficult and sometimes impossible to navigate.
Met up and road walked/hiked a bit with Cricket, Una & Sensei.
Clouds are still intense today - rolling in quick - very windy. Sometimes we are above the clouds, sometimes below, sometimes in the distance you can see both above and below the clouds.
Weather forecast for rain today and snow tomorrow - it is getting colder as we hike. Decided to push and do a walking breakfast (no stopping) (I ate peanut butter m&m’s) because it’s too cold and windy to sit still - must keep moving goal to get into town to warm up and eat!
Some trees are frosted and have dropped ice with the blustery wind - there are ice chunks all over the road in places.
Hiked by/through a ski hill/resort. There are large water reservoirs that I believe are used to make snow for the ski hills.
Met a trail angel hiking and gifting food to hikers. I was given an apple and Gatorade - so delicious.
The trail has been destroyed in this area - from the fire and subsequent logging activity in the area. There are stacks of logs about and sticks and wood chips everywhere.
Road walked through clouds and mist and ski lifts and frost. Eventually made it to the parking lot area. Met a local that said the fire came through 2 years ago & flooding occurred the following year. The area, trails and road were all damaged severely.
Got a ride into town from Dale - a trail angel. Cricket and Una caught up with us and road in the back of the truck bed into town.
Got dropped at the Grizzly Cafe for brunch. Many hikers here - ate the Amelia.Ate and omelet with hash browns, sausage and biscuits and gravy (and some of Devon & Amelia’ strawberry pancakes).
Went to the Hardware store - they’re very hiker friendly and have gear for resupply. All PCT hikers were given a pin!
Checked out the grocery store - but too tired to resupply right now.
Walked to the Airbnb - started laundry and showered. Got settled in, took a nap and read a bit.
Walked back towards town for dinner and a beer at the Wrightwood Beer Co. Delicious hazy IPA and amazing sandwiches and tater tots.
Devon and Paul left in search of desert - I started and called Steven. It’s starting to rain - walked home in the rain.
Movie night: we watched Lucy and went to bed.
