Day 29
2026-05-03
Goal: Halfway UP to Wrightwood
Woke in a fog surrounding the tent. Packed and got on trail - hazy foggy misty dreamlike.
Hiking UP into the fog a ledge on one side with cloudy white nothing and overgrown bushes and shrubs on the mountain edge. A little dizzy inducing - leads to a sensory deprivation of sorts.
Eventually we hiked UP high enough that the fog has turned into clouds. The clouds come and go drifting over the trail in whisps of haze.
Up a bit more and we are above the clouds - you can see them flowing over mountains in the distance. Gah! So surreal!!
The trail came to a road, and a detour must be taken due to fire damage and washouts on the next section of trail - road walk.
Still hiking among the clouds. Burned out areas are visible. Up up up we go. A few off-road vehicles are on the roads - forcing us to the shoulders. It’s so remote up here it’s jarring to see vehicles!
Roadside lunch of my random gas station haul. Ate a giant pickle 🥒 as we are near a landmark called ‘Gobblers Knob’ so it seemed the appropriate time…
Off the road and back on trail - still going up into pine forest. The wind has picked up and is very Gusty - not ideal for the next section of ledges and narrow walkways…
Reached out camping destination - still windy and chilly. Ate dinner in the tent and settled in. Likely to be chilly tonight due to wind and high elevation. 🥶
