Day 16
2026-04-20
Goal: Get back on trail!
Egg burritos 🌯 for breakfast with coffee.
Washed dishes, finished packing and taped up feet. Temporary tattoos in place - Ready for the trail!!!
Our driver Grumpy showed up with Virginia and a new hiking friend Mat in the car - we smooshed in for a ride to the Humber Trailhead.
2.5 miles up Devil’s slide to get back on the PCT. Thankfully conversation was flowing and we made pretty good time.
Continued up to the trail split for the San Jacinto summit - Mat is hiking the summit. We had lunch before we split up.
Mat shared the story of how he came to have a man’s ashes/remains in his backpack… (When looking for a place to stay in town for the night a woman approached him and said she had a room. He went home with her and her behavior became odd and erratic - she started saying how much he reminded her of David her dead husband… Long story short she gave him some of her dead husband’s remains to spread - Saying he’ll know what to do with them David will tell him…) So for the moment he’s hiking with them on trail…
Continued hiking with Virginia today on trail. She was a welcome distraction as today was very difficult - lots of elevation gain hit highest point yet on trail of 9,000+ ft elevation.
Many stream and creek crossings right on trail. Crisp clean mountain water to filter and drink. One almost waterfall with water flowing and streaming through big boulders and through trees over the trail and down the mountain (San Jacinto River).
Beautiful pines and boulders the size of houses. Some remains of snow hidden in shady crevices.
Vistas all day of distant mountain ranges - green on the east and brown on the west side of our climb. Windmill’s visible on the west side in the valley.
Got to camp pretty late in the day. Very tired. Setup ate dinner as the sky went from purple and pink to neon pink and dark.
Finished setup and cleanup and snuggled in to bed.
Super windy all night - very loud (not calming white noise).
